This project is realised within time; interplaying the visual representation of two
depicted cities of the Mediterranean. Taking my subject matter from İstanbul and working
on a daily photo archive, I introduced a series of installations into small shops in
Formigine, Italy. I have placed these images with no explanation about ‘where’ and
‘who’ in the quiet town of Formigine, where it seemed to me, nothing ever changed. The
framework of this intervention lies in the European manner of addresing Turkey as an
object of curiosity. Getting involved in new public context, I try to ask where the axis
of identity is in terms of geography, culture and heritage. How are things positioned in
new context? Is it possible to name the city of İstanbul within the European context for
the eyes of a stranger, who may only have a slight idea about real Turkey? Taking two
cities in observation with many layered identities I try to find a common ground of visual
representation.
