WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? Basically I try to question. See where the axis of being begins in terms of geography, culture and heritage. How are things positioned in life? Simply it happens often today; instantly when the worlds collide and clash within intra structures. Movement and flow leads to destruction and contribution. The question well maybe written as “who are these people and why they are here? The othernesses in this context is defined vaguely while interfering among micro organisms of identity and global account for money. Meanwhile curiosity grows and masses seek for recognition. At this point; it feels irrationally difficult for me to define what it means to be a Turkish citizen.
This is a kiosk which I had installed A4 coloured prints. Four prints for each window of the kiosk said `Who are these people` in Italian. Formigine, 2006
Apart from proposing an ideal state of being or belonging simply I try to see what is it to be Turkish. Overall this question is on the agenda of the European as I am more often faced with it. Occasionally for a project on the Mediterranean it creates irony. The Mediterranean is regarded to be the mother earth for civilizations, on the other hand Turkey specifically duties to fulfill the role of bridging cultures and contradictions. This overweights unless the picture shows the cultural heritage and awareness.
Along with this, is it possible to name the city of Istanbul within the Mediterranean and/or European context for the eyes of a stranger- who slightly has an idea about Turkey? My pictures will be interrupted by basic queries of belonging and identity over the space and movement. I arrived in Formigine with such questions and some pictures that I had taken in Istanbul. I studied the town. Also through strong interaction with the other artists, I decided to install these pictures in small shops of Formigine.
